 INTRODUCTION
Welcome to North Carolina - Moldova
Service Learning School Partnership Project
(November 1st - November 12)

Task 1 Let's create an interactive cross Atlantic map !
Dear American and Moldovan educators - please "pin" your location on our international map. Simply click on the + button and add your name, photo or avatar and 2-3 sentences about your school.  Click on "submit" and your name will appear in the list on the right side of the map. When you click on a pin, you will be able to see the detailed profile of all our participants. The map will help our students "see" where their web pals come from.

Task 2 Let's share video handshakes

Please ask your students to create a short photo or video introduction for their web pals. Let them introduce themselves and share about their hobbies, their favorite subjects, their interests. Based on these virtual introductions, we will help you find your cross-Atlantic partner. Each class should submit one introduction by email: academiaaise@gmail.com. The introductions will be published on our project blog:
VIDEO/PHOTO INTRODUCTIONS
In the meantime, teachers are encouraged to post short introductory messages in the ”Comments” section below - tell us a few words about yourself, your students and what you expect to gain from this partnership.

(Teachers will interact on this blog page)

Task 3 How can students make a difference in their communities?

Ask your students to browse through the Global Youth Service Day video collection and choose two videos they liked the most. They should post short comments HERE to explain why they liked the videos, what they learned from them and how young people from Moldova raise awareness about issues that are important in their cities and villages.

What I thought of the video
I thought the video was a great way to show that the students in Moldova really care about the environment. It’s good that they decided to clean the park because we need to take care of the planet we live on.

I think that this is a really great idea made by great minds. If you think about it, the times are getting worse and worse. There is little good in the world. So, doesn’t that mean we have to cherish the little good, even make some more? Uniting, team work, being a leader is what this project is about, and I like that

Hey everyone, North Carolina is a beautiful place to live. Where I live at in Charlotte, we don't get a lot of natural disasters and if snow sticks to the ground, we are out of school. Charlotte has two professional sports teams, The Carolina Panthers(American football) and The Charlotte Hornets(basketball).

Task 1
Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service. It is rewarding to the school as well as the whole community as it raises awareness of issues and brings students closer to where they live. Instruction and reflection helps to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.

Service learning is important to education on many different levels and applies to all age ranges. Early development helps to expand a child’s understanding of what a community is and service learning at a college or university level helps to improve understanding of communication and encourages a real sense of giving back to the community. Just last year, Fourth Grade at Queens Creek gave back to the coastal community by working to reduce the amount of plastic waste produced in local restaurants. Being able to write letters and get positive responses really encouraged the children and gave real rewards. This is a rare thing for children to receive in many school settings.
Task 2
Global Youth Service Day – Cleaning a Park in Calarasi
The students from Vaslle Alecsandrl set out to clean their local park, promoting green education in their class and their community. Students took leadership by making the decision of what the project would be and journaling their actions and thoughts. Children also took charge of cleaning the park. They engaged in the community by targeting a public space that the whole community would share. Their involvement was celebrated by the posting of their video on the internet as well as recognition from the community. The children learned that they could make a difference to their community by volunteering their time and hopefully will continue to volunteer for Service projects!
