Service-Learning is a teaching-learning strategy that engages youth in service to meet learning objectives and address real-world issues.
Bringing service-learning in our school give students the opportunity to explore their values and beliefs, to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, to connect with professionals and community members who they will learn from and of course increase their understanding of the class topic.

What I liked from the video was that the pictures were pretty. I learned that you can teach others things you know, like teach something important to little kids like kindergartners.

All of the children are a good example for each of us. They made a lot of good things, that gave us a motivation to do something too. I hope we will try to invent something that will help to ourselves and community's development. I liked more the action of students from Sîngerei, who helped that granny, because here we don't have many people who could think that it's too hard for an old person to clean her house.

Service-Learning is a good impact over community and people who live there. The oportunity of cooperation between Moldovian schools and North Carolina schools is a chance to make new acuaintances, which will improve surroundings toward good. Due to Service-Learning the people from Moldova and North Carolina can do the place of the habitat more clean and more beautiful. The studens are a special example for al humanity. I chose the "Teaching English to kindergarten children " video made by the students from Florești.Congratulations for them.They did a great job.
I've noticed the 6 steps of their successful service learning.First of all, the service they engaged into is very meaningful, because it is good to study English from an early age and they helped the children from kindergarten to learn English with a great pleasure. It was a service that easily could be incorporated into the school curriculum.They easily found commun language with the little ones.It was visible students leadership because they felt like real teachers and had a great responsibility.The Students had time to reflect on their service-learning experiences and got more from this project.Throughout their project, students acquired, evaluated, organized, interpreted, and communicated information in different formats.They also learned how to use reflection as an organizational tool.
As a result they have friends from the kindergarten,they improved their English and the final product is prominent in the school community and continues to be an integral part of curriculum programs.

Service Learning is a good thing for the world to show people that they can make a change. I liked the video cause they’re helping people in need. I think it’s a good thing because some people in this world don’t have food, money, and more. In the video they are teaching other students to help people who are in need, teaching people to take care of the community because, why wouldn’t you take care of a community that you live in? If you give you will receive more so this service project is good to teach people more to teach them how good it is. It’s good because the student will know how it feels to be responsible. I have watched many videos made by students and teachers from different places , but one touched me so much , because it tells about one of the problems from my native place, Dondusheni.
Those six steps i have noticed the students and their teacher have taken for a successful service learning are the following :
-together with students ,the teacher brainstormed a plan to clean a part of a town involving in the project volunteers, citizens, in order to make Dondusheni a better place
- they began to act , making exhibitions , connecting the mayor of the town who supplied them with needed things
- they investigated the place where they were going to act
-next comes implementation of the project
- after cleaning the place they analyzed how meaningful their service was and reflected upon their service learning experience, how ideas become reality

Task 1
Service learning is a strategy that involves students in solving the problems of the community. In this way they can change it in better and show to the others that it is important to be useful. Students learn to become more confident and responsible.
Sevice learning is a lot of work done with fun and responsobility.
Last year our students cleaned the park from our village. After few weeks, when we went there for a picnic, they were so happy and proud because the park was clean and they contributed to this activity.
Task 2
I have chosen the video "Peace and Tolerance" because is an up-to-date problem in our world. The students and the teacher followed the steps. First of all they choose an idea for their project which adresses a community need. Then the teacher lets the children to participate in the activity and gives them leadership opportunities: they are the reporters, then they are the teachers for younger students, they give certificates, pieces of advise, take pictures , make the film. The students have time to reflect on their experience "And now we understood all we have to do is: we can make the world a better place for everybody". It was a good combination between service and academic learning. During the project the community was deeply involved: the population find out what is tolerance, the children learned how to solve a conflict... In this way they bring changes in people's lives. This is the best demonstation and celebration for the students.
Elena, "Peace and Tolerance" is, indeed, an inspiring video, so good choice! It is very important to assign specific roles to each and every student involved in a project, so thank you for pointing this out.

Service- Learning is a task of how to help or provide for the community around them. Service learning at our school will show us how to get along better and help the community at the same time. Every day, we go outside for lunch. We make sure to pick ours and others trash up off the ground. A another time we picked up trash from different places in the city.

My own definition to the service learning is a teaching strategy. The service learning videos help a lot and it’s teaching other viewers that people are in need and that they need our help. The videos are helping a lot of people that they can do it they just have to believe its not hard to help some who needs it more than you. The videos are so inspiring that they are showing people to care about the community that they live in. We’re saying thank you because you are sharing videos that people can learn from. The video I selected was “Glogal Youth service day event in Calarasi”. They followed the six steps for successful service learning. They celebrated Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) by sharing this video with us. They decided to cleanup a park that needed cleaning. A student said that they learned a lot of new English vocabulary. Everyone was cleaning their park and they weren’t tired. It seems like they had lots of fun.

Service learning is doing service while learning from it. You learn about the environment while doing service. Bringing service learning to our school could help the students learn more about leadership, responsibility, and teamwork.

Service learning says it in its name. This helps students very much with learning about their community. It can also be fun; I have seen many videos were they were laughing. Service learning is a learning strategy that involves young people in solving the problems of their community. Students learn to become more responsible, more hard-working and more organised.
Durind this year my students made a lot of good things: cleaned the park behaind our school, planted a lot of flowers in front of the school, together their parents cleaned the well from the school yard. Also before Easter holiday we went to the cemetery and helped people to clean it.
Liliana, it is great that your students have previous experience in engaging in community service initiatives. Our project will teach you how to link community service to learning and teaching.

Some students in Singerii Noi helped a Blind woman with special needs. Helping someone like that can be really hard, and offering yourself like that is a great act of leadership. They learned that volunteering gives no physical reward, like money or a treat. Instead they get rewarded with a proud feeling that I can’t even describe in words!

I have watched many videos and I enjoyed the majority of them,but I will choose"We have no differences"by Access Vulcanesti.

2 They were involved in this project to make people with dissabilities happy, to show that they are worthy and that they can lead an active life.

TASK 2
I've chosen the video made by the team from Soroca "Let's go green kids!". I consider their idea a great one due to the fact that they succeeded to integrate the knowledge they got at school with implenting a community project.
They followed the next steps:
1. Firstly they managed to select an idea that would suit the needs of their community, that is the need of informing the citizens from their town from an early age about recycling.
2. They applied the information they got from their course in ecology and learnt practical ways of recycling.
3. They managed to take the leadership of the project cooperating with the community members, thus being the ones in charge with the main aspects of the project.
4. They reflected on the work that they had done and made conclusions.
5. They had the opportunity to involve their community members who jelped them in their project.
6. And finally they shared their experience with the smaller kids, and afterwards with all of us by posting the result of their work.
I consider that service-learning is modality to explore this word which offers different opportunities to students, school and community. It gives us a lot of useful knowledge and skills which help us to develop our personality. Thus, it changes our life, because service-learning widens our horizon.
So service-learning has many benefits. For example are: new opportunities and perspectives, collaboration and communication with different people, development of critical-thinking.

This problem is very close to today's situation .There are people on this world who were born with physical abilities and their life isn't easy,becouse everyday they have to face with difficulties they need to overcome.
This video followed the 6 steps greatly.
1.What meaningful service they engaged into?
The service they were engaged in was to make people with special needs happier and showing to them that they aren't alone in this world ..
2.How did students take leadership?
The students organized a list of activities for children with disabilities, encouraging and trying to make them happier.
3.How did they engage in their communities?
Theyorganize and participate in activities involving disability children in society .They learned to work together, along with school leaders and community partners, trying to remind everyone that we need to help those people who aren't as lucky as we are .

They organized a lot of activities for these people with disabilities and involved them to participate without fears .
5.What did they learn from their experience?

Service learning is based on teaching and learning tactics to engage students in solving problem in society. The benefits of service learning are that prepare students to take well thought decision in life, improve our friendly relations among students. Children painted different posters and wrote teir wishes to make world better.An interesting step , that impressed me was collaboration with mayor , who encouraged their activity and offered them his help , I think it is something special , because a lot of persones was interested in this project .I noticed besides collabotarion with an American teacher , April Salermo ,it was a good idea , thanks to this they had an exchange of information, students learned new thing about American Comunitee Service.Before their actions , town was in a terrible state ,but after that I was surprised by cleanliness hat they made.After a great work , i think children understood that it is very important to keep our country and nature in order to get pleasure and feel happiness.
Task2 I consider that the video “My school my community and me” offers very much information for us. They proved that it is very important to contribute to maintaining cleanliness and to help old men. They could became leadership, because everybody took decision(how and why they do it).They cleaned in the school yard and in the garden, and this is very important, because they contributed to keep harmony in society. The pupils participated in this action . So it gave a new experience which offers a new opportunity in their life.

Task2: I really enjoyed the "Christmas Time is Sharing Time'' video where students showed that they are interested not only in moldovan culture but shared information about Christmas in America. they also took the the project in their hands, because they made cards, sang carols to social-vulnerable people and ones with disabilities. I believe that those people need to be included in such festivities. Through photos they showed what a great time they had making special little gifts for strangers that become friends. And they learned how important is to smile to someone and that it can make their day.

The video which I have chosen is "We have no differences,we are equal in spite of any disabilities! "(Access Vulcaneesti) ." If you are doing something that you love,an hour can feellike five minutes :if you are doing something that you don't ,fiveminutes can feellike an hour".(Ken Robinson). Indeed pupils showed that they loved helping people who were different, but they perceived this as something not to be afraid of.They taught tolerance, acceptance and appreciationof differences. They have educated not only the participants of the school but wide public as well. They have learned that disabled peers have a wide variety of identity elements,interest and are able to participate in various activities on equal level. GREAT JOB for those students.

Service learning is a strategy through which students not only learn, but also act, interract, influence, develop their leadership abilities.The process of learning is not only based on the strict school curriculum, it is focused on students' participation in community life in order to receive a feed-back.
2. ''Service learning'' is not a new term or strategy for my lyceum. During our 25 years of existence students have demonstrated that they can tackle a problem both theoretically and practically. They can meet real people with real problems and the community they live in can be reliant on them.Organizing charitable concerts, helping the disabled, gathering money for poor families, donating clothes for children in need, collecting money for a boy with an untreatable desease, offering support to the old - these actions were, at the beginning, some goals, sometimes seeming difficult to achieve. When they see the result, when people, simply, thank them and smile, when public authorities send a thankful letter, they are proud of themselves and , at the same time, the community is grateful for the students' effort.
Service Learning is a great opportunity to change world/community and not only, it changes people. By Service Learning we learn how to care about world and how to solve problems of our environment(at the same time develops our skill of team working) . I understood what a great experience had those pupils that participate and I wanted too to involve myself in the same activities.
The video that caught me the most is "Christmas time is sharing time" by their responsibility and leadership they showed.With them I understood that a "smile can make a person's day" . :))

I liked the video ''My School, My Community
and ME'' elaborated by the students from Singereii Noi.
- The meaningful service addressed a woman in need
- The students were advised by social workers to help Mrs Nina.. They were not guided by an adult in all those activities.
- Being a very united and hard-working team, the students managed to clean the yard and do some housing chores of the blind woman very quickly.
- Even if the woman can't see, she was told everything they had done for her, of course, with her permission. Mrs Nina was very thankful and satisfied by the student's work. She invited the students to come again to her house.
- They learned that the young are a powerful force that can move obstacles, they can influence, change and interfere.

1 Service-learning -it is a method to learn youth how to solve problems of environment and to imply them in different actions that can change our world.
2 I think that service learning has many benefits for my school because this service can improve it. Due to this all studenst have the opportunity to find out what are the problems of our world, they can get a great experience and understand that our future is in our hands. Also , it is very important for each of students because it help them to fit into voluntary actions which develop in them the purpose to make something beautiful for other people, for nature .To my mind , it bring us the skill to communicate with different people ,it educates youth and make them better because give them usefull qualities like self confidence, leadership, love to work , desire to help. I liked video " We can make the difference" from Cantemir.There is represented that students wanted to change them city , to make it more beautiful ,to bring smile on people faces. They took leadership due to fact that they decided to be responssible to take care about the ground near them school. They had been working for many hours but the results were evident , they dug all territory and planted beautiful flowers.It is a great thing to active in this, because they got important skills of working and self-confidence and thought that they can do all that set like a goal. They engaged very well in their communities, because they keep understanding and mutual aid , also they got help of maids school.At the end, they organized the disco to relax and to rest. I think they learn from their experience that all is in their hands, they can change this world, they just need working
Service learning is research-based learning that engages youth in service to address real world problems. The Benefits of Service-Learning are : development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills, learning more about social issues and their root causes, develop students' civic and leadership skills. I think that service learning helps us to study our world. It is very important for our life and I think our school will benefit a lot from it.
I like the video about Global Youth Service Day made by students from Hîncești. They did a big work, they tried to do our world better. They did it because they want to show us that our world needs our attention and our help.I think that when they made this video, students became responsible and they gain confidence. This video helps them to not be afraid of camera, they learned a new method of communication . The result of this video is that they taught us to love our world.

I watched all the videos, but I would like to describe "Christmas time is sharing time", a project implemented by students from Access Program and their teacher (maybe one of the reasons is that Christmas is coming).
According to the video, we can distinguish all the steps followed by the students in implementing the project:
- they detected the problem or the need of the community;
- they chose/selected the beneficiaries of the project;
- they agreed upon the tasks they have to accomplish;
- they engaged community members within the project;
- they demonstrated and celebrated the project implementation;
- they shared their experience with us.
I think it was a very successful project with a great and forceful impact on its beneficiaries.

Task 1
1) Service Learning represents an innovative form of education that focuses on the practical application of knowledge outside classroom.Students are engaged in different activities aiming solving a problem from their community. This way of studying suppose that students learn through their own experience: doing volunteering, internships, etc. It enhance two actors: students and community. Students acquire knowledge working in and for the com unity, but the community gain its improvement.
2) Some examples of service-learning from my school are: students are involved in the cleaning of the school yard, they work as volunteers in different NGOs from our town, they had internships at special centers, helping people with disabilities etc. The benefits of service learning are: it teaches civic responsibilities of students; they become less bored and more interested in realizing such kind of activities; improve the ability to apply in real situations what they have learned in the class; it broaden their horizons; develop the feeling of empathy, tolerance, collaboration and team working; it can also be an opportunity for career development especially by means of the connection with professionals and community members.

I chose the video "Funny English for Everybody".
1. Pupils try to familiarize kids with the new vocabulary of English Language, to make them happier, more aware of the importance of knowing English.
2. Pupils were involved in the process of teaching trying to help kids doing different activities.
3. they collaborated with the community members together with their tutor, they were monitored while planning the funny games, exercises (arranging the handouts, helping kids, preparing the balloons, etc).
4. Pupils not only shared their knowledge by teaching colors, singing and dancing on English music, but they also had fun together with kids, thus helping to a positive and calm atmosphere.
5. they learned to be cooperative, kind, friendly, to help those who are smaller. Also, being in the coat of the teacher/educator, they learned to be more respectful to children, more attentive. This experience also developed the competence to deliver an information in front of an audience and not be afraid to speak in front of a public.
To my mind "service-learning" is an opportunity to develop our skills and to help the surrounding environment and people.In my opinion in my school "service-learning" will help to improve quality of education and develop skills of students, for example, we can communicate with other schools to see what problems persist in our environment and to solve them.
In the video I saw "Make this World a Better Place!"
(Students frolm Hincesti) the students tried to help the environment ,they clean nature.
Their leadership was shown due to the ability to look for necessary instrument to accomplish their goal to save nature.

I have watched many videos made by students and their teachers. Most of all I liked the video "Global Youth service day". From my point of view it is a good project. They did their best. Students from Soroca taught little children to recycle.They were able to achieve their goals with the help of the parents and kindergarden's administration .They understood that changes begin with them-the young generation.They created interactive activities capturing so, children's attention and interests.They learned to work together and encourage to recycle making the enviroment cleaner and better.
Service-learning combines learning objectives with community service in order to provide a pragmatic, progressive learning experience while meeting societal needs. Benefits are helpful for students, school, community. For students service-learning helps to develop critical thinking, explore or cement their values and beliefs. For school, develop students' civic and leadershiping skills.And community inject new energy, enthusiasm into the organization's work. Of course there are many benefits and I think service-learning is very useful and important.
I think that "GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY" is a very important holiday especially for community. This can be seen in video: "Global youth service day from Hincesti". There children urges people to protect nature. I think that this problem is seen often today .So this step is important for others. Thanks to this step children develop some qualities. They used active problem-solving, reasoning and decision making to explore and communicate knowledge. Through this children presented some results, they demonstrated how they cleaned the polluted place .This experience has great importance on them because by this they will be more careful towards nature and protect what surrounds them.
Assignment nr.2, task nr.1
"Service learning" is a social process in which all learn and all have benefits. It's the way of getting better in a wide range of activities, it's the way we prepare our future leaders to get to know problems the society is facing with, it's the way in which we teach, practice and develop special skills as critical thinking, communication and others at our students and not less important is the fact that, we do everything for our society and world as a whole.
Our students are full of enthusiasm, willing to explore new technics, technologies, to set up new goals and of course to keep on learning, using and sharing knowledge they aquire trough such proceses that are welcome for our communities.
The benefits that we can get sight of are from the involvement of students in Lyceum, where they learn how to do it and than they apply their knowledge. It's good that other students will watch them closely and the first will be of a great example for others that come after. Moreover, our society needs students envolvement in social activities, as our almost entire live is nowadays conqured by Internet and cyber communication.

I have chosen the video from Singereii Noi "My School, My Community, and Me".
What I wanted to say about it is that the group had followed the 6 steps for a project. The group of students were quite good at performing and fulfilling the steps at the same time they succeded to finish it in only 2 days term.
Answer 1: They were engaged in planting flowers and trees around the Lyceum.
Answer 2: The main question with lidership was not difficult from my point of view in this case, as it is also a part of teacher's duty to ensure the right choice of a leader for the group. I think the leader had fullfiled her duties.
Answer 3: As we could see, in that community and in mainly all our communities we encounter similar problems. They delt with it in a manner that was set before while the project was taking steps. A good idea to help the woman and I understand that there is not only one person in need. We can see students being very glad that they could fulfill that task.
Answer 4: They got thanks from the old woman and her blessing for their future activity.
Answer 5: I think that they understood that doing good things cost you nothing. When you see happiness in someone's eys that is the great thing! Actions teach more that words.
I would like to say thank you from my side to the teacher and to the group that had such a good idea of bringing actions into live.

I believe that service learning is first realizing an issue or desire which needs to be discovered or supported more, then by actually becoming involved in the issue/desire, to either make a difference or learn more about the desire. I believe that service-learning is putting your learning into action.
Task 2:
The benefits which I have witnessed of bringing service learning into my school has been huge. As a health science school, the students are interested in learning all aspects of the medical field. Allowing students to have first hand experiences and hands-on experiences encourages them to fulfill their dreams. In my school, students are encouraged to work in clinical classrooms to obtain a Certified Nursing License. Students are encouraged to join upward bound and learn about nature and their health. Students also have been involved with creating an outside vegetable and spice garden to donate to the community.
My own experiences have been to realize that students learn much better when they are involved in the activity and have an opportunity to create a product and use it to help others.

After watching many videos, the one which interested me the most was, "making the world better by helping the elderly" I believe that the project somewhat supported the six learning steps. The students discussed a problem which they realized was in their community and then choose an elderly disabled person to help, which was meaningful service. The students were engaged in meeting the elderly woman, obtaining water from the well and using the well to get water, and keeping the elderly company, which was curriculum connections. The students realized what the elderly woman's problems were made decisions, which was student leadership. The students decided to involve others with their project and get other students involved and share their findings with the community which was the community involvement. Finally, the students demonstrated and celebrated by sharing with others and reflecting on their progress.
Nicole, unfortunately, in Moldova the elderly are not taken care of and the pensions are way under the minimum, so we are very happy to see that the young are willing to give a helping hand to them.

I chose the "Access-Taraklia". This video is very interesting and useful for us. It's clearly seen that 6 steps of their successful service learning.The theme they chose is very meaningful and we all together should do something in order not to polute the water. It was a service that easily could be root the curriculum. They are organized a visit to a house where children explain that there is a solution from any problem.They proposed some time for this solution.Children found out sponsors, involved local TV, newspaper and radio station in order to atract more people's attention. As a result they understood that it is what everybody need, they got a satisfaction from their job and want to do something else for their future life, society.
I like how they clean the park because that was a good proactive choice. If somebody dropped something you wouldn't know if somebody stepped on the paper, there might be glass in the paper.
I liked how the bigger kids were teaching the little kids how to speak
English in different ways.I also liked the pictures,the background and the music. I learned that helping is important.
1. Service learning is meaningful learning through community service. Students find an area of need and complete tasks that will be helpful in the community while learning about that area of need.
2. Service learning would benefit our students by allowing them to understand that there are others out there living differently than them, they may be young but they can still make a difference, teaches them about cultures/ being culturally responsive, and helping others will make them feel good about themselves. Service learning could allow students to make friends with others that they normally would not be friends with and this would cut down on bullying. Students who may have a hard time being interested in school may find a new passion for learning. Beach clean up projects where students learn about the impact of pollution on the local beaches plants and animals. Students then take time to go and pick up trash, make posters, and teach others about how important it is to keep our beaches and oceans clean.
In the video Lets Go Green Kids students were shown how to reuse items that are typically thrown away and make them into works of art, such as butterflies and trains. The kindergarten students were taught about recycling and its importance towards preserving the earth. The curriculum connection in NC would be the life cycle of a butterfly for kindergarten and community helpers. The older students were the leaders and taught the younger students about recycling and how to create the art projects. Students reflected at the end by commenting on how much the kindergartners learned and how much fun they had completing the tasks.The younger students will then go home with a fun craft to show their families and then discuss why they made it and teach their parents about recycling. The older students demonstrate how to use recycling to create an art project, celebrated their beautiful pieces of art with each other.
Our 4th graders discussed the difference between service PROJECTS we have done in the past and service learning. Our projects have been things like bringing in food for food drives and making holiday cards for veterans who are in Veteran Administration hospitals during Christmas time. These were both worthwhile projects and gave students an insight into needs in our community, but they were short term, one class period discussions. We decided that a service LEARNING project would involve more time and would align with a curriculum goal. It would also involve communication with an expert in the field who could give us a wider perspective on the project and how it impacts our world.
Task 1 - Service learning is method to connect academic content and 'volunteering' in a real life situation. It is a way to educate ourselves and others in an area of need outside of a traditional classroom setting.
Task 2 - "Peace and Tolerance"
What meaningful service they engaged into? Facilitating discussion on what peace and tolerance are and how to achieve them.
How did students take leadership? The students interviewed community members, passed out information they gathered, taught lessons to younger students, and guided the younger students through activities designed to challenge accepted norms.
How did they engage in their communities? Interviews followed by passing out information. Activities at schools, certificates for completion.
How was their involvement celebrated? Participants received certificates.
What did they learn from their experience? I think their perceptions of what others know about peace and tolerance were changed based on their initial findings. They probably had to learn and adjust presentation style from talking to adults versus talking to kids.
I was super impressed with this project!!!

1. Service learning in is the teaching and learning about community relationships, community services, and volunteering. Service learning is a way of building community relations between those who may not have the opportunity to work in certain job skilled areas. Service learning is a great way to build relationships and learn from each other. (Community Involvement)
2. Bringing service learning into the school would be beneficial to our school and students because the students would be able to learn, ask questions, and participate using a service learning provider. Students could learn life task, behavior relationships, and the importance of community. Students could learn that through service learning, there is something bigger than ones self.

I watched “A Simple Flower Can Change the World” from the Theoretical Lyceum “Mihai Eminescu” Hincesti town. I enjoyed this video because of the age difference in the students. I like how the video started out by saying “A simple flower can bring change!” This in itself is a powerful meaning of the project that these students engaged in. This is just as saying that one volunteer can change his or her surroundings. In our curriculum here in North Carolina, our younger student learn the parts of the flower and we also engage in planting or growing a flower so that our students can have ownership in their education. We also look to brighten our communities and school yard too.
The students learned, took charge and planted their flowers bringing a beautiful change to their environment and enjoyed the comradery that went with planting the flowers. No doubt that the students took time to reflect on their accomplishment. Next the student drew and taught younger student how to draw flowers and landscapes. A beautiful and honorable way to educate and give back to other students and community. The student becomes the teacher.
Assignment 2: Tasks 1 & 2
The aim of service learning is to intentionally and purposefully integrate education with service. An effective partnership between an educational institution and the surrounding community provides the opportunity for both outreach and awareness of social issues. Through community service, students become culturally aware of the differences of others in their surrounding area. In turn, community members receive cost-free benefits, while spreading consciousness of the struggles faced by the local community. As a very recent graduate of Elon University, I saw the benefit of service learning firsthand. Elon as an institution prides itself on commitment to experiential learning. Upon graduation, students receive a transcript keeping record of the five types of experiential learning they complete throughout their undergraduate career, one of which is service learning. My transcript reflected hours spent volunteering at a local afterschool program for underprivileged children, providing literacy tutoring at The Village, teaching at a school in Costa Rica, and giving my time at three different elementary schools exposed me to the needs of the families living just minutes off campus. My service learning experiences taught me the difference socioeconomic status can make in a child’s academic success, as well as intervention measures that can and should be taken to lessen the achievement gap in North Carolina.
Demonstrated and celebrated in the video, “Access or Pollution?” Moldovan students targeted service meaningfully, as a polluted river was negatively impacting everyone in their community. Their project connected to science curriculum as it aimed to offset the consequences of pollution, as well as social studies curriculum as they studied past actions of community members. The students took leadership while involving the community by conducting research, spreading awareness through posters and fliers, and actively cleaning the river with help from the public. Upon completion of their project, they reflected on the process by discussing the measures they took and the ultimate outcome.
