Elena, it is great that your students will be engaged in a service learning project which includes several steps, and so your students will have several ”jobs” to perform. Good luck putting together the video report.

Elena, the theme your chose together with your students is very important, as many Moldovan citizens do not yet sort their trash accordingly. Let me know if you need help with the video report.

Tony, I have never heard of anyone collecting littered pencils, so this sounds like a great school project. We can't wait to watch your video report!

1. Our service-learning project was planned to be implemented in the NGO “Speranța” of Cahul, in the period same period mentioned on the blog, from February 13 to March 12. My students brainstormed a list of ideas for the project in the class. Then we decided to help homeless pupils. First, I visited the center „Speranța” and talked with the director of the NGO Liudmila Covalenco, and she was very happy to have as volunteers there. Then, together with my students we started to plan our activities.

#1 To find a way to work with a homeroom class in my school without being a classroom teacher, I chose a 4th grade class that comes to me for media center instruction once every two weeks and every Monday I am their instructor in the computer lab. Our project involves helping a class of kindergarten students learn how to use our desktop computers at school. The little ones are familiar with devices that they can "swipe" - such as cell phones or tablets - but our computers require students to use a login and password, and a traditional keyboard and mouse. One kindergarten class does not have an assistant teacher and no one has taken them to the computer lab to learn how to use the computers. My 4th grade students are pairing up with a kindergarten student and will be helping them learn about our computers every Monday afternoon. Monday afternoon is when my 4th grade students have computer lab instruction.

We plan to implement our service learning project by visiting Possumwood Acres Wildlife Sanctuary on March 30th. This will give the children a hands-on beginning to the project and they will be able to see just who and what we are helping. Students will be fundraising to give money to the wildlife sanctuary. Some of the ideas they have had are penny drives, collecting cans, and encouraging others to volunteer their time to help the sanctuary. Academic skills will include advertising, counting, estimating the amount of money earned, and researching the different animals that we will be helping. Civic skills will include asking informative questions, presenting to their peers, and caring passionately about their community. We want to create more awareness in them for the place that they live. I personally hope that it opens my students eyes to the different wildlife organizations that are numerous in NC but are not well known. I want them to be able to selflessly give to a cause that they think is worthy and to work hard in making their goals a reality. As a teacher I hope to gain a greater understanding of how service learning projects work and how they can be beneficial to my classroom. I want to be able to do similar activities every year and re-use the great resources that this partnership has offered!

Our students will visit Possumwood Acres on March 30th to see what the facility looks like and find out the needs. Students will then work as classes to come up with ideas and make posters to raise awareness for the animal sanctuary. Students will also gather supplies from the needs of the week list that is found online. We will gather cans to turn in for money for the facility.
